Local Area
The village of Llandaff is a little gem on the outskirts of Cardiff city centre.
Often referred to as The City of Llandaff, it has its own stunning cathedral dating back to 1107, which is just a two minute walk away from Maltsters.
The village itself has a pretty high street with local shops and amenities, plus an attractive village green. Llandaff was also the birthplace of the children’s author Roald Dahl, who attended the nearby Cathedral school which features in his book "Boy". Located just 2 miles from Cardiff’s city centre, Llandaff is the ideal location to stay whether on business or for pleasure – it’s close enough to the centre to be convenient, and far enough away to escape!
Maltsters history
Maltsters is probably the oldest licensed pub in Cardiff. There has been a building on this site since 1310. The pub was originally towards the rear of the current building and was called "The Moira". It has been a Brains pub since 1958.
The Rev. James (of Llandaff!)
One of the fantastic real ales you will find on our bar is The Rev. James, a beer which originated from the Buckley brewery of Llanelli. The original Reverend James Buckley came to Llanelli in 1760 and set up the brewery in 1799. A descendent of the original Buckley family was James Rice Buckley, born in 1849 to James and Ursula Buckley. Having studied theology at Oxford, he later became vicar of Llandaff for 45 years and Archdeacon of Llandaff Cathedral between 1913 and 1924. A monument of The Reverend James Rice Buckley still stands proudly within the Cathedral grounds today.
